Shoot 4- Work Record

Plans for this shoot:
Due to the successful of shoot 3, I wanted to go out and find more images in my museum and library of Waltham Abbey years ago so I can compare the images. The main images I wish to focus on will be the difference in housing, ruins and also public time- events. As this image is a build on top of Shoot 3, the photographers which have influenced this shoot are the same,  although the difference between this shoot and shoot 3 will be that I can learn from what didn't work in that shoot and build/ improve on those factors/ for example, not to use images where I am no longer able to capture- such as the church image which was my weakest image in shoot 3. Also it means I can take the factors which did work such as camera settings to make the lighting the same.
The technique I will use throughout this shoot to capture as simple images as possible will be to save the images onto my phone and add a third grid on top so I can place the same elements in the same sections; another factor I learnt in shoot 3 which will help my fore coming shoots is that as these are listed buildings in Waltham abbey, the best way to find the same building is by looking a the buildings roof.

What I actually achieved:
Firstly, the way I have presented the image personally I believe shows how Bernd and Hilla's work helped influence my work because instead of placing each other separately, I wanted to edit them together much like they did as I learnt from researching their work that this made it much easier for an audience to build up the difference and compare between them. The key reason I chose to recreate this image was because one of my stronger images in my previous shoot was of this location at a different angle and looking back after I had completed the shoot, I thought it would have been even stronger if I were able to include cars- showing that difference in societal attitude although I was worried that a car would block the framing, although when I found this old image, I thought it was a good idea as I would be at a distance enough to include both the background building and cars in the foreground. As a whole, I believe this image is really successful in showing the difference in society because as Waltham Abbey homes thousands of people now, if there was that little isle in the middle now, there would be many crashes as it would dangerous. Additionally, as the original image was very old, the audience are able to see the quality of the photo has been damaged from the age of being in a library/ fading in the scanning process, but at the same time it shows how technology had developed in terms of camera settings because when the older image would have been taken it would have been a camera where you take the image of something in front of the lens and that's it, although I am able to change factors like the focus- creating a depth of field effect with a blurred foreground and in focus background/ viser verca.

This is another image which I believe was quite successful in this shoot and that I wanted to address in this record because much like the image above, it shows the change within society. As shown in the image above, what used to be in front of these houses was grass, a place where children would play and relax outside if they didn't have a garden, however, now many houses have 2 or more cars which would result in the change of scenery because roads would have to extend to allow space for both parking and passing by cars. This therefore shows that it is people who space society- the increase in people and high supply and demand for technological goods such as cars has meant society has had to change as a result. Personally, I think the scenery of the top one looks more friendly and opening, a place for neighbours to come together, as opposed to a concrete playground for a parking place for moving metal objects where the only neighbour interactions would be an odd smile when parking up, or asking someone to move their cars. Thus showing how society has changed in terms of being part of a community as well- very little people nowadays don't know anything about their neighbours, which is quite sad, but very true and I believe this image is very relevant in society now and can therefore be quite symbolic for my audience- the main aim for project as a whole, thus showing influence from photographer Andreas Gursky who's work is shown across my blog in my image bank and photographer research.

In comparison to other images I have captured in this shoot, I do believe this is the weakest image I captured because now looking back at it, I did actually do it wrong. If you look at the new image the dark building on the far left side of the photo is actually the building I needed to take it of. Therefore I do not think this is a very good image. Furthermore, even if I did take the image of the correct building, I do not think it would have been a very strong comparison because the building is very box standard but like the building shows in the original photo. Therefore, due to the progression in technology, it would affect the final image if it was on the correct building because I wouldn't have been able to get any where near the same composition because of the road in front of the building is very busy I wouldn't be able to stand in it long enough to take a photo unless I went at night and this wouldn't have a good effect either and this would also still be quite dangerous due to the speed that people drive down this road at.

What I am doing next;
For my fifth shoot, I wanted to do one more of the comparing old with new images for a shoot because I would therefore have 3/7 shoots in this style and I do believe when I finish this shoot, if I were to only have one or two shoots of this style, it would have been a very cohesive final series of images, however with 3 shoots, I believe I will be able to gain more stronger images to use when it comes to choosing my final images. A key factor which I want to extend on from this shoot will be to carefully research each image so I know exactly where it is and that I take an image of the correct building so I do not have an image which I can no longer use. Additionally, I hope to focus more on the differences in buildings because I think this can link with this shoot and the last one but at the same time adding to the portfolio new locations and symbolism.
